2012 HOPE Mission Trip
Rock Prairie Presbyterian Church

  1. General Location: Northern Alabama Presbytery
    • 16 County area (from Cullman, AL north to Tennessee line)
    • 30 Presbyterian Churches
    • 665 miles Janesville to Huntsville
 
  1. Specific Locations: Four possibilities are:
    • West AL – Marion & Franklin Counties
    • West Madison County (between Athens & Huntsville)
    • East AL – Sand Mountain (Jackson & DeKalb Counties)
    • Cullman County (central)
 
  1. Background Information: 38 tornadoes (3 were F5’s) hit Northern Alabama on April 27, 2011. 123 are dead. 500 families are still homeless. If Alabama rebuilds one house every day, it will take 23 years to recover! 75% of homes need repairs and 25% need new construction.
 
  1. Proposed Dates: (alternate group could go earlier. $50/group)
    • Travel – May 19-20 (Saturday & Sunday). Car-pool.
    • Work – Monday, May 21 to Friday, May 25
    • Travel – May 26 (Saturday of Memorial Day weekend)
 
  1. Other Considered Locations:  
    • Tuscaloosa, AL
    • Nashville, TN – floods
    • Pennsylvania & New York – floods from Hurricane Irene
    • Joplin, MO
 
  1. Funding: Currently +/- $1,000 in HOPE Fund. +$500 from vacation week and +$500 from chess table & chairs (Dan C. donation). Other church donations are possible. We will apply for a Milwaukee Presbytery grant.
 
  1. Lodging: $20/person/night paid by HOPE. Churches, schools, maybe a church camp (Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville).
 
  1. Meals: Same as previous years (2 hot meals and 1 bag lunch). $5/day/person. We have access to church kitchens. Will need kitchen volunteers.
 
  1. Showers: Available at all sites.
